Week 2! I actually ran out of time and subsequently forgot to upload this one last week, so i’ll be doing two this week now.
Riika Laakso is another practitioner I came across on It’s Nice That(they’re not all gonna be I promise). She was born in Finland, but now works in Berlin, Germany. She is also a member of the German illustration collective Parallel Universe.
She uses strong contrast and simple shapes, with held back detail. Skewed perspectives mixed with diagonal patterns. And the people almost resemble a kind of “primitivism”.
These are some of her highlights for me:
- the Von Der Sieben book, which is created using individually hand printed illustrations in black and white. The running illustration is really great. http://riikkalaakso.com/von-der-sieben.html
- Der Panther, which is an illustrated zine inspired by the poem by Rainer Maria Rilke http://riikkalaakso.com/panther.html
- Calendar 2016.
- Huhe Luft Magazine illustration, which is almost Lichtenstein-esq in its colour and pattern.
